2013 United Way Campaign

We just completed another successful United Way Contribution Campaign and we're incredibly pleased with the results.  Our goal this year was $44,000 and we were able to surpass it with a total of $47,282 pledged for 2014.  Many thanks to our generous Valkyrians for their willingness to share their good fortune.  Also, congratulations are extended to our 15 winners of the various raffle prizes ranging from a $100 Uncorked.com gift card to a $1,000 Best Buy gift card.  Prizes will be awarded in January.
Since 2007, when we opened our doors, Valkyrie has been a proud supporter of the United Way.  Over the years, Valkyrians have donated an impressive $148,355 to the United Way!  Take a moment to let that sink it....one hundred forty-eight thousand dollars! Just to give you an idea of what that has done for our communities, that amount is what it takes to provide:
114    Children with a year of after-school care
89,013    Meals for hungry children
2,853    Weekly visits/support for at-risk teens on the street
228    Adults with urgent medical and dental services
30    Elderly, home-bound neighbors with daily in-home meals and care.
Again, many thanks to our Valkyrie employees who have supported our United Way campaign through the years.  And from our family to yours, Happy Holidays!!!

Inc. magazine’s Hire Power Awards recognizes Valkyrie as being among America’s leading job creators

Excerpt from a recent press release:

New York, NY (October 24, 2013) – Headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Valkyrie Enterprises was featured in the 2nd annual Inc. Hire Power Awards, recognizing the private businesses that have generated the most jobs in the past three years.

Valkyrie placed among the top 20 private business job creators within the state of Virginia and 9th nationally in the Government Services category.

“This year has certainly been full of challenges…the sequester, a government shutdown, and no DoD budget (again) for FY14. Nonetheless, we are honored and humbled to have made the 2013 Hire Power list,” stated Gary M. Lisota, President and CEO of Valkyrie Enterprises.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that only 222,000 full-time jobs were added in 2012—compare those numbers to the honorees of the Inc. magazine’s HIRE POWER AWARDS, which created 69,182 jobs between January 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. The numbers become even more amazing when you look closer—the top job creator, Universal Services of America added 14,240 employees to a workforce of 35,000; second-place Vivint added 1,943 to 6,496 and third-place Heartland Dental Care added 1,759 to 4,965. These small to mid-sized companies and others just like Valkyrie could hold the key to restoring America’s economic vitality.

“For the second year in a row, we are pleased to recognize the employers who are putting Americans back to work for a second time,” says Eric Schurenberg, Editor-in-Chief of Inc. “The HIRE POWER AWARDS are the only awards that single out job creators. We think it’s fitting to pay tribute to company founders not just for their business prowess but also for their immense contribution to the welfare of U.S. workers and the vitality of the U.S. economy.”

Please join us in congratulating Justin VerSchneider!

Justin joined the Valkyrie team over four years ago in March of 2009, as a part-time Junior Draftsman/Engineering Aide in the Marine Engineering Design Division. Still in high school and attending the Virginia Beach Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in their newly established Marine Engineering and Design curriculum, Justin worked 2-3 hours each afternoon to start. As an intern, he was exposed to as many different facets of the industry as possible.

During his employment here at Valkyrie, Justin has been mentored in the accomplishment of ship check/site checks (including climbing the mast of an Aircraft Carrier!), honing his skills in freehand/mechanical sketching, data collection/research, and development of detailed Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs), all necessary skills to support a career in the Marine Engineering and Design industry. He has provided drafting support for various programs including our Alteration Installation Team (AIT) installs (JPALS and N-UCAS), Army Watercraft Service Life Extension Program (SLEP), IP Modernization Shore Facility Upgrades, and numerous other special projects. He has been exposed to the Hull, Mechanical and Electrical (or HM&E as we call it) functional areas of marine design to provide him with a better understanding of the field and aid him in selecting a career path forward.

Based on this exposure, he has expressed an interest in the Hull/Structure side of the business and is currently pursuing an engineering degree in Civil/Structure engineering at Tidewater Community College.  Justin has established himself as a hard, dependable worker and a valuable part of the division and we are pleased to promote him to a full-time position as a Junior Designer.  Please join us in congratulating Justin!

To support MSC’s Engineering Directorate’s diverse engineering needs, Valkyrie assembled a world class team.  Our Team Members include:

Valkyrie Named Among the World's Top Simulation and Training Companies

Valkyrie Enterprises has been named to Military Training Technology Magazine’s (MT2) 2013 list of Top Simulation & Training Companies.
MT2’s list features approximately 100 companies from around the world that have made a significant impact on the military training industry across the spectrum of technologies and services. These companies’ products and services allow U.S. airmen, Marines, sailors, soldiers and Coast Guardsmen to train and rehearse for missions in theater, or to prepare for deployment at home station.

In addition to making the list, Valkyrie was one of four companies that also earned a Yellow Ribbon, the distinction of being an “Up and Coming” company.

“This honor is particularly noteworthy when you take into consideration that two years ago, our Training Division did not exist,” Gary Lisota, Valkyrie Enterprises President and CEO said, “Our Training Division and our team members who are doing simulation work for the government have certainly made a mark and we appreciate all the great feedback we get from our customers. We are honored to have made the MT2 list and it is our hope to stay on it for years to come.”

Valkyrie Helps Restore BB 64

Our Valkyrie volunteers who have been onboard the USS Wisconsin over the last two years will be recognized on August 1, at Nauticus.  All area volunteers who have been a part of the "Restore BB 64" effort were invited to the event, during which a special recognition stand honoring 2012 volunteer groups will be unveiled.

A very sincere "Thank you!" is extended to Toby Robillard and Kate Green for leading the charge these last two years.  And of course, we thank all who have come out and given of their time and elbow grease!

For those of you unfamiliar with the project, Valkyrie has adopted the Bridge, also known as the Pilot House.  We are in our second year of involvement and have already accomplished much, though there is still much to be done.

So far, we have done a space paint out, restored the decking, installed charts on chart tables, repaired alarm panels, lights, and other electrical equipment, and shined A LOT of brass! Considering that she sat for fifteen years without daily attention, the Wisconsin was and is still in need of upkeep and repairs.  We are always looking for help, knowledge of items in the space, ideas, and equipment donations to help get her back into operational shape.  If you're interested in joining our team, please contact Kate Green.  This is a family friendly event! Also, please note that for those of you who know students needing to fulfill volunteer hours, Kate is happy to supervise such individuals/groups.

Again, thank you to those involved; if you are considering getting involved, please do!  Over the next few months, we will be tackling the following projects:
-Opening the Citadel
-Status Boards
-Lighting

We hope to see some new faces onboard in the Fall!!!

And stay tuned for photos from the August 1 event!

(Photo taken during a Saturday morning volunteer effort)

Valkyrians recognized for hard work and dedication:

NSWC Dahlgren presented its Group Awards on April 19th.  Among the honored was Valkyrie’s very own Preston Poore.  Pres is a member of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Common Combat Management System Feasibility Study Team.  The team was cited for their technical contributions to the Navy’s development of LCS combat system capabilities.   The team’s technical feasibility and cost analyses were completed within a highly aggressive schedule to support FY13 ship acquisition decisions and strategic program planning.  Way to go, Pres!

Valkyrian, Scott Wood, was presented with a Letter of Appreciation from Capt. Doug Lemon, PMS 312C PMR, for his work on the CVN 68 Class Extended Docking Interval Program.  BZ!!!

NUCAS NEWS!

Surely you remember seeing a Navy Unmanned Combat Air System demonstration (NUCAS-D), the X-47B, take flight off the deck of a carrier (the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) to be precise) within the last few weeks, right?!  Well, did you know that Valkyrie has been involved with this project for quite some time and that we played a pivotal role as well?

Most recently, Team Valkyrie was responsible for creating the lab that was placed in the carrier’s hangar bay, from which the launch was conducted.  The idea behind the Conex box project was conceived and sold by Valkyrie Operations to PMA268 and contract prime, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NGC).  It was a plan that was designed and engineered by Valkyrie’s Engineering Design Division to incorporate system requirements from 4 different groups into a single, cohesive structure.  This project was assembled, delivered and tested by Valkyrie Technical Services in time to support all NGC and Government test objectives.

This project fully embraces the “WE BUILT IT” bumper stickers that our team ensured were placed on the units prior to their being put on display for the numerous 2 and 3 star admirals, captains and other dignitaries who have toured the facility so far.  We are currently determining where the unit will go after the program ends.  One of the suggestions is to place the unit in the PAX River Air Museum.  If that happens, we will have a piece of history on permanent display to the general public.

Not bad for being done in less than 9 months, inception to final acceptance!

N-UCAS Program Coordinator
